Hospital recognized for success in preventing infections

Emory Johns Creek Hospital announced today it was recognized by the Georgia Hospital Association for its success in preventing bloodstream infections in intensive care unit (ICU) patients that required a central, direct intraveneous line to the heart. The recognition came as the result of the “Stop Bloodstream Infections Collaborative for the ICU” project conducted by the Georgia Hospital Association and Johns Hopkins University. A total of 66 Georgia hospitals participated in the project. Emory Johns Creek Hospital began participating in 2009 and will share its tools for success with the other participating hospitals.

“This recognition is an honor for us, and showcases the quality of healthcare we continually strive to provide our patients,” said Marcia Postal-Ranney, infection preventionist in the quality department at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “Our basic practices for preventing these infections have a demonstrated track record for success and we look forward to sharing them with other hospitals.”

Anytime a patient requires an IV, particularly one directly to the heart, there is a risk that bacteria may come in contact with skin and travel into the body. Emory Johns Creek Hospital organized a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and administrators to use the latest evidence-based guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other agencies to develop the most effective and safest practices for insertion and maintenance. Administrative staff complete daily audits on every patient with a central line. Next steps will expand the project to evaluate data for other, non-ICU units of hospitals, such as medical and surgical units.
